AmeriCorps Ed Volunteer Donates a Summer of Service

An AmeriCorps Ed volunteer, Colin Thompson, worked as an eGranary portal developer for the WiderNet Project this summer. AmeriCorps Ed is a nationwide program that provides higher education awards to students in exchange for completion of community service work.

Colin completed 300+ hours of service at the WiderNet Project. In addition, he was required to recruit ten additional volunteers to work at the WiderNet Project. Aside from completing his responsibilities as an AmeriCorps Ed volunteer, Colin also received ongoing training and support from the WiderNet staff.

Colin developed a computer refurbishing portal for the eGranary Digital Library, containing a complete step by step instruction manual for refurbishing computers. His computer refurbishing portal will be added to the newest 2TB version of the eGranary Digital Library. Colin says he has enjoyed his time at WiderNet and he hopes to continue to expand his knowledge of computer programming at the WiderNet Project and in his future educational endeavors.

Colin has received a $1,000 scholarship for his AmeriCorp Ed work, and we congratulate him for his successful completion of the program.

He currently is beginning his senior year at the Scattergood Friends School in West Branch, IA, this fall. Scattergood Friends School is the only boarding school in Iowa. Founded in 1890, Scattergood is located 10 miles east of Iowa City on 125 acres of prairie and farmland. The school has about 60 students, and while most are from the Midwest, there are about a half dozen international students.
