WiderNet attends SCECSAL Conference in East Africa

WiderNet Director, Cliff Missen, and Katie McNeirney, a second year MSLS student, traveled to three East African countries (Malawi, Zambia, and Kenya) from July 26th - August 12th. They began their trip with a pre-conference tutorial of the eGranary in Malawi before attending the SCECSAL conference, which brings together librarians from all over East and South Africa. After the conference, Cliff trained the American Spaces team at the US Embassy in Malawi on how the eGranary can be used at American Spaces locations around Malawi. Cliff then met with librarians at the Ministry of Education to talk through the upcoming deployment of eGranaries across Zambian schools and visited a really cool organization called BongoHive. The trip concluded with a visit to Kenya where Cliff was hosted by the US Embassy and Henry Mendelsohn to conduct trainings.

In September, Katie hosted a presentation to review and discuss their trip.  She highlighted her ongoing research on digital libraries across sub-Saharan Africa, and what the ICT and library situations are in Malawi and Zambia.
