Editing Bitmap graphics with GIMP

Digital photographs and Web images are always bitmaps.  These images can contain complex details and millions of colors and are relatively easy to manipulate as a whole. However, editing individual details is tricky and destructive.  Bitmap images lose clarity when they are shrunken or stretched.
