WiderNet Executive Director (Half-time)

Title: Executive Director

Reports to: The Board of Directors

WiderNet is a Durham, NC non-profit that, for 20 years, has been dedicated to improving digital education and communications for all communities and individuals around the world.

Affiliated with the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, we provide resources, coaching, training, computers and educational materials to schools, clinics, libraries and homes in underserved areas of the world.

We develop and distribute the eGranary Digital Library, a plug-and-play server that provides instant access to millions of digital educational documents without the need of a connection to the Internet.  It has been adopted at over 2,000 locations worldwide.

We also produce the Corrections Off-Line Education Platform (COEP), a special version of the eGranary for correctional institutions that is in over 30 U.S. prisons.

Executive Director 

The Executive Director acts as the Chief Executive Officer and is responsible for the overall vision, leadership and management, direction, program execution, and achievement of objectives. The Executive Director works under the general oversight of the Board of Directors.

The Executive Director is charged to

  • Direct project to develop and promote innovative information and communications technologies for developing countries
  • Recruit, train, and supervise project staff, interns, and volunteers. 
  • Guide efforts to improve and promote the eGranary Digital Library and COEP, engaging a wide variety of stakeholders to develop and disseminate the innovative technology. 
  • Oversee sales of equipment and digital content to a worldwide customer base. 
  • Oversee the organization’s finances. 
  • Write grant proposals and secure funding from individuals and organizations. 
  • Work with Board to identify priorities and translate the goals and progress to WiderNet staff, stakeholders, and the public.

1.  Leadership and Management

  • Provides overall staff direction and supervision including hiring, firing, and resolution of grievances, develops annual work plans with staff which includes goals, objectives, inputs and outcomes for the programs and services.
  • Maintains ongoing management and financial oversight to assure the organization stays within approved plans and budgets.
  • Develops agreements, relationships and contracts with outside vendors, organizations, universities, government agencies and other organizations to carry out WiderNet programs.
  • Ensures effective administration of WiderNet operations in compliance with sound business practices and applicable law.

2.  Support the Board of Directors

  • Takes direction from the Board of Directors and works with the Board to assure that WiderNet operates with a clear mission and a long-range strategic plan that is consistent with the mission.
  • Keeps the Board of Directors fully informed on conditions, opportunities, issues, and challenges for the organization and the environment in which it operates so that the Board can carry out is governance, financial oversight and leadership role.
  • Develops with the Board, on a yearly basis, a work plan for the board and organization to carry forward the strategic plans of WiderNet.

3.  Finance and Fundraising Performance

  • Develops annual budget and fundraising plan and submits to board for approval.
  • Develops relationship with funders of WiderNet programs and maintain regular communications with funders and supporters.
  • Identifies grant opportunities and develops proposals with required reporting to funding sources.
  • Responsible for fiscal management that ensures maximum resource allocation and maintenance of a sound financial position.

4.  WiderNet Program Administration and Execution

  • Oversees programs, marketing, sales and services to distribute eGranary, Pocket Library, and other WiderNet products and services. Builds upon existing relationships and identifies new markets for products and services.
  • Designs and refines outreach and communications strategies that increases knowledge and interest of WiderNet and its programs.
  • Supports technical staff as they work with volunteers and stakeholders to improve the functionality of our offline and pocket libraries.
  • Ensures program quality and consistency with organizational goals through ongoing evaluation of all programs and services to determine effectiveness and client/user satisfaction.
  • Works closely and in collaboration with the University of North Carolina, WiderNet’s research and development partner.
  • Develops and grows WiderNet government, corporate and business relationships.


Required Professional Qualifications:  A bachelor’s degree  ·  A familiarity with the situation of poor and marginalized people • Experience traveling and living in developing countries  •  Transparent and high-integrity leadership  · Three or more years senior nonprofit management experience  ·  Solid, hands-on, budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting  ·  Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development, and task facilitation  ·  Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff  ·  Knowledge of fundraising strategies and donor relations unique to nonprofit sector  ·  Ability to elucidate WiderNet’s strategic vision to staff, board, volunteers,  donors, and the general public  ·  Strong written and oral communication skills  ·  Ability to interface and engage diverse volunteer and donor groups  ·  Strong public speaking ability

Desired Professional Qualifications:  A demonstrated interest in librarianship and/or education  ·  An understanding of appropriate technology  ·  Experience working in prisons  ·  Hands-on experience with IT and innovative uses of technology.


Salary range:  Half-time. ~ $26,000 annually, depending on experience.
