In June, 2003 the University of Jos and the University of Ibadan each took delivery of 150 computers and lots of accessories, books, and software. The shipment had been delayed in the port for 10 months by customs inspectors and wound up costing the University of Ibadan $27,000 in customs duties and port storage fees. (Compare that to the entire cost of collecting, updating, packaging, and shipping from Iowa to Nigeria: $5,500!) On top of this, the shipment arrived in the middle of a six-month strike, requiring it to be safely stored until the strike finished. But despite all these travails, the equipment is now being pressed into service at their respective grateful universities. WiderNet Project staff Cliff Missen, Mike McNulty, and Mike Schmitz were in Ibadan to help sort the equipment in June when they were finally delivered to their destinations. University of Ibadan geographer, Godwin Ikwuyatum, who was visiting Iowa when the equipment was packed in May (pic) 2002, was "lucky" enough to be in Ibadan to help unload the equipment too!
