Project Overview
Computer Donations and Shipments

Oduntan Bode helps with the collection and setup of donated computers

The computer donation project is a practical and essential component for the efforts of the WiderNet Project.  Up to date computers and networking equipment are required for technician training and decision maker coaching.  This project aims to supply computers to Nigerian universities so that students and teachers will have access to computers in laboratories and classrooms.

Our donations come from individual donors, local organizations, and University of Iowa departments.

We accept donations of computers that are Microsoft Windows compatible, Internet-ready, and Pentium desktops or 486 laptops or better.

This is an ongoing project.  Computer donations are accepted at any time.  If you have unwanted computers or equipment that you think may be of interest to us, click here.

We collect computers until we have enough to fill a 40-foot cargo container (approximately 300 computers).  Our volunteers test the equipment and the erase the hard drives.  The recipient universities then pay for the shipping costs (roughly $20 per computer.)

Our first shipment was sent in May of 2002.  The recipients include the University of Jos and the University of Ibadan.  Our second shipment was sent April of 2004 to Bayero University and Ahmadu Bello University, also in Nigeria.
