Staff Feature: Claudia Taylor and Committee Host Fundraiser for the WiderNet Project: High Rollers for Education Casino Night

As Thursday April 28th approaches, former WiderNet staff member, Claudia Taylor, and her committee work diligently to finalize their fundraising event: High Rollers for Education (HRE) Casino Night. The High Rollers for Education committee, composed of University of Iowa students Laura Cyrek, Maia Griffith, Kenisha Looney and Taylor, has solicited donations, lined up entertainment, and even trained volunteers on how to deal cards, man the roulette table and play poker.

The High Rollers for Education Casino Night will take place on Thursday April 28th at Old Brick. The event will run from 7pm-midnight, and admission costs $5. Food, entertainment, and raffle prizes will be provided. Whether you like to play poker, black jack, roulette, or craps, HRE has something for everyone.

“This has been the first student driven fundraising event for the WiderNet Project” said WiderNet Director Cliff Missen. Kenisha Looney explains that “learning how to solicit donations and coordinate all facets of an event has been a great learning experience”. The committee has applied for and received funding from the University of Iowa Student Government. They have also talked to various student organizations such as Campus Activities Board and Men in Business on how to successfully run a fundraising event.

The HRE team arranged a Buffalo Wild Wings event on Wednesday April 6th, in which ten percent of all purchases on that day were donated to the WiderNet Project when customers presented a ticket. The committee used the Buffalo Wild Wings event turnout as a test run of their marketing reach.

This event will raise money for the WiderNet Project and its teacher training program for colleges in Liberia. Come join the Iowa City community for a night of gambling, and spread education from one institution to another!
