Our E-mail Systems

Connecting UNIJOS to the World

line1.gif (2856 bytes)

Since August 1996, when UNIJOS opened a single user account on American On-Line (AOL), we have been expanding the communication options of the UNIJOS community.

Today we host two email systems: one hosted by the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) which provides free email to 685 staff and faculty members and one low-cost pay-per-byte system via a private ISP in Ibadan which serves 290 users.

Many students share a single email account, so we estimate the actual number of users to be around 1,200.

Over 5,000 mail messages are sent and recieved over the Internet each month while many more thousands are sent to and from individuals within the UNIJOS email system.

Our email systems are hosted on two Pentium-class machines running Red Hat LINUX.

We are currently experimenting with a Microsoft Exchange server that hosts 26 accounts within the Computer Centre.
