Digitizing Nigerian
Information, Culture, and Research

Over
the last six months, we have trained over 100 staff, faculty, and students to create
documents in the World Wide Web's HTML format.
Using FrontPage, Microsoft's cutting-edge
Web editor software, and Microsoft's Internet Information Server, hundreds of pages have
been created. The sites range from departmental Webs for Linguistics and Law, to pages
describing the Yankari National Park, the Jos Wildlife Park, and cultural festivals around
the Jos Plateau. Staff from the state museum and students from various colleges have
also participated.
Employing a Sony Mavica digital camera on
loan from a visiting faculty, a HP scanner purchased by the university, and a multimedia
workstation donated by Gateway Computer, we have published over 1,200 images of Jos,
Plateau State, and Nigeria on the Web .
South African researcher Mike Jensen
estimates that .022% of all the Web sites in the world originate from Africa. When
UNIJOS finally connects to the Internet, we intend to double that number!
