An Experiment in Distance Education

For the first time in history, a course is being taught in other countries from Nigeria via the Internet.

Since January 1999, a visiting Fulbright scholar from the University of Iowa has been teaching a course, Internetworks in International Development from the University of Jos. With 21 students in the classroom at UNIJOS, 10 students in a classroom in Iowa City, and 16 students from three countries taking the course via the Internet, this course demonstrates the possibilities of distance education via the Internet.

Students view all the class materials, including lectures, on the Internet, either on the University of Iowa Web server or on the UNIJOS Intranet. They then discuss the readings and their projects via email.

Next year the course will be taught at UNIJOS from Iowa City.
