Africa Online

Commission for Africa
- The African Information Society Initiative
(AISI): an Action Framework to Build Africa's
Information and Communication Infrastructure was
adopted in May 1996 by the Economic Commission
for Africa (ECA) Conference of Ministers. AISI is
also the principal activity within the United
Nations System-Wide Special Initiative on Africa
programme on Harnessing Information Technology
for Development (HITD/SIA). ECA is the lead
agency for both the implementation of AISI and of
HITD/SIA.

ERNet
- India's Project ERNET was created in order to set
up a computer network for researchers and
educators. Information is provided on the
project's objectives, strategies, services and
location nodes. Over 200 academic and
R&D groups exchange email with each other
using ERNET. Over 8000 scientists and
technologists have access to ERNET facilities.
International access is provided using a 64 KBPS
leased line from NCST,Bombay to USA. ERNET is a
project of the Department of Electronics (DoE),
Government of India, assisted by the United
Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Plans for
ERNET include the creation of a satellite
communication system to enable ERNET to reach
locations which do not have good data
communication links.
