Informatics 2000 Initiative
Recognizing that information technology can lower operating costs, increase efficiency and productivity, empower organizations and people, and improve the quality of life, the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) has launched an Informatics 2000 Initiative to encourage the deployment by the public and private sectors of significant information technology applications by the Year 2000 in support of economic growth and social development throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

Leland Initiative (USAID)
The Leland Initiative is a five-year $15 million US Government effort to extend full Internet connectivity to approximately twenty African countries in order to promote sustainable development. The Leland Initiative ( LI ) seeks to bring the benefits of the global information revolution to people of Africa, through connection to the Internet and other Global Information Infrastructure (GII) technologies.

RINAF (Regional Informatics Network for Africa)
The RINAF project is meant to bring basic data communication services to a number of african countries in order to improve the communication capabilities among African research institutions and improve the communications with the worldwide research community.  Their goals include: creating a group of technicians specialized in the African network services management; to increase the awareness on the importance of data network services in Africa; to contribute to the cultural growth of the institutions hosting the RINAF nodes; to leave, at the end of the project, a structure that may be completely handed over to one or more regional centers able to manage the data network services for Africa.
