Organizations Promoting Connectivity and Digital Communication in the Developing World


American Association for the Advancement of Science
For more than twenty years, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has promoted collaboration among the scientific communities of Africa, the Pacific Rim, Europe and Central Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, the U.S. and Canada. AAAS organizes programs in areas of mutual interest, working directly with individual scientists, organizations and societies, and policymakers.
The AAAS has several digital communication projects and links to digital resources in the developing world.

Economic Commission for Africa
The African Information Society Initiative (AISI): an Action Framework to Build Africa's Information and Communication Infrastructure was adopted in May 1996 by the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Conference of Ministers. AISI is also the principal activity within the United Nations System-Wide Special Initiative on Africa programme on Harnessing Information Technology for Development (HITD/SIA). ECA is the lead agency for both the implementation of AISI and of HITD/SIA.

HealthNet
HealthNet is SatelLife's computer-based telecommunications system which links health care workers around the world. HealthNet provides access to the latest medical information, e-mail connectivity, electronic conferencing, and other services tailored to meet the current demands of its users.
HealthNet is a system of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, simple ground stations, and radio- and telephone-based computer networks. This seamless system functions reliably and inexpensively even in areas with little or no telecommunications infrastructure.

NSRC (Network Startup Resource Center)
The Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC), a non-profit, pro bono effort, has been involved for several years with the deployment and integration of appropriate networking technology in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, and Oceania.   Partially supported by the National Science Foundation, the NSRC provides technical and engineering assistance to networking initiatives to provide public networking access, especially to academic/research organizations and NGOs.
