Accessing the eGranary Online Demo

The eGranary Online Demo can be accessed via the Internet to preview the eGranary Digital Library contents and interface.

This demo server is isolated from the World Wide Web, so visitors may be assured that the resources they are viewing come from the eGranary and not from the Web. (To test this once you are attached, try opening a Web site not mirrored in the eGranary, like Google.com.)

The eGranary Online Demo will emulate the experience of the eGranary Digital Library, with one major difference: the speed will be slower than if you were directly connected to USB or LAN eGranary. (In our field tests, we find that resources are served from the eGranary five times faster using a local area network instead of even the fastest Internet connection.)

Also, this is our "development testing" server. We are making changes and updates as we go and testing them on this demo server, so things may change from day-to-day.

Option 1: Download the eGranary browser (preferred)

The easiest way to access the eGranary Online Demo is to download and install the eGranary Browser, a custom version of the FireFox browser that is optimized for the eGranary Digital Library.

Click on the following link and select "Run" to install the eGranary Browser...

eGranary Browser without Flash and Java: http://www.widernet.org/downloads/eGBrowser-48.0.2.exe

eGranary Browser Plus with Flash and Java: http://www.widernet.org/downloads/eGBrowserPlus-48.0.2.exe

Option 2: Configure your existing Internet Explorer browser

If you cannot install the eGranary Browser on your computer (like in situations where system security prevents users from installing new software), you can try to configure your current Web browser to use the eGranary Demo proxy server.

  • In Internet Explorer, go to the menu item Tools
  • From the Tools menu, select "Internet Options..."
  • From the Internet Options window, click on the "Connections" tab
  • From the "Connections" view, click the button labeled "LAN Settings..."
  • In the "Local Area Network (LAN) Settings" look for the section named "Proxy Server"
  • Put a check mark in the box next to "Use a proxy server for your LAN"
  • Set the proxy address to "egdemo.widernet.org"
  • Set the port number to "9980"
  • Deselect "Bypass proxy server for local connections"
  • Click the OK button and then click the next OK button
  • In the Address field of your Internet Explorer browser, enter http://egranary and then press your Enter key to go the eGranary's homepage
  • To verify that you're accessing the eGranary and not the World Wide Web, try accessing a Web site that isn't in the eGranary, like www.qctimes.com or www.yahoo.com

When you are done visiting the eGranary Demo proxy server, you will need to undo the proxy settings in your browser.

  • In Internet Explorer, open Tools - Internet Options - Connections - LAN settings - Proxy Server and remove the check mark from the box next to "Use a proxy server for your LAN."  You don't need to delete the IP number or Port number.
  • Click on OK and Ok.
  • Now your browser is back to normal and you can browse the Internet without using the eGranary Demo proxy server.

If you have any questions or if you would like help setting up your browser to use the eGranary Demo proxy server, contact one of the WiderNet technicians at support@widernet.org.

Note: If you're still getting an old version of the eGranary Digital Library, delete your history and clear your cache (Tools, Options, Network).
