In accordance with The WiderNet
Project's goal to keep costs to a minimum for subscribers, the
eGranary Digital Library is available in many configurations based
on the needs of your organization. However, we cannot provide copies
of previous versions of the eGranary -- this includes the 120 GB,
250 GB, "500 GB", 750 GB and "1 TB".
The first step to getting an
eGranary Digital Library is requesting a quote. The
Ordering Process page at
www.widernet.org/digitalLibrary/egquote explains the process
and contains a link to the Quote Request form and License Agreement.
Signing the
Subscriber License Agreement is required to purchase the eGranary
Digital Library. It's available at
www.widernet.org/eGranary/eGranarySubscriber/SubscriptionForm.asp.

Shipping Services and Options |
| |
The default shipping
service WiderNet uses is FedEx Ground (US only) or FedEx
International Economy, but a subscriber can request another
shipping method or speed.
Subscriber institutions need to consider the reliable
postal service in their countries. Shipping varies from
country to country and city to city. For some shipping
estimates you can look go to the Web sites below.
Please note that DHL is not an
option, as it no longer operates within the United States (or at
least not Iowa), though, in some countries FedEx or UPS may hand
the package off to DHL to finish delivery. We have no control
over this. Shipping options are
dependent upon subscriber preference. If
the subscriber institution has staff/personnel traveling to or
from the USA, they can choose to have their drive hand
delivered. This could be free if that person is able to come to
Iowa City and pick the drive up, or at a decreased cost of
shipping, it can be shipped to that person within the US. It is
the subscriber's responsibility to arrange this and provide the
shipping information to the sales person at WiderNet, who will
provide the shipping cost.
PLEASE SPECIFY ANY DEADLINES AT THE TIME OF YOUR QUOTE REQUEST!
WiderNet will do it's best to meet them, but depending on the
size and complexity of
your order, payment method and your follow-through during the
sale process, it could take anywhere from 1-4 weeks
to finalize the order, make and ship plus
another 3-14 days to reach it's destination. |

Frequently Asked Questions |
| |
-
Can we back up the eGranary?
Legally,
you cannot copy the eGranary even to make a back up, because
hundreds of copyrights are involved. Technically, you probably couldn't
make a successful copy anyway, because WiderNet uses special
hardware and software to do this.
-
I can purchase a hard drive more cheaply,
so can I just download the eGranary onto it?
No. While the content of the eGranary Digital Library is
essentially free, the prices above reflect the actual costs
of procuring, testing, preparing and handling hardware, as
well as providing technical support and updates. We believe
that all formats of the eGranary Digital Library represent a
fantastic bargain, though the prices may change as we learn
what it takes to make this effort self-sustaining. Thanks
for your continued interest.
-
Is there a software or installation disc?
No.
All software materials for operating the eGranary are
contained on it. There is no disc. We do include a paper
copy of installation instructions which someone --
preferably a trained computer technician -- will use to set
up the eGranary.
-
Can users download data to their computers
for off-campus studying?
As long as it's covered by fair
use, yes. The eGranary looks and acts just like the
Internet, so people can download, copy and bookmark
materials as if they were online.
-
Can the same data be accessed by multiple
users simultaneously?
Yes!
-
Is there a limit on how many terminals a
server can support?
None that we know of yet.
-
Are there other limits on the servers you
provide? For example, while the primary purpose is eGranary,
can we run other applications, add additional hard drives,
etc.?
We provide servers made from high quality, but
standard components so they can be serviced in the field
with locally obtained replacement parts. There is nothing
fancy or proprietary. This means that yes, you could add
more to the servers, but sometimes this will complicate our
ability to provide you with technical support, since we
cannot troubleshoot hardware and software not supplied by
WiderNet.
-
The License Agreement requires semi-annual
reports. What do you expect these to contain and how
detailed should they be?
The eGranary automatically
maintains logs of use. By semi-annual reports, this means we
need you to send us the logs periodically. We then create a
report and merge the data with that of other installations
to get an idea of the eGranaries use. This helps us to plan
improvements.
-
Do you have a position on giving
user-owned PCs access to the server network?
We
encourage everyone and every device to gain access. This
does increase the possibility of viruses, though, so virus
protection software is a must.
-
Do you have versions of the eGranary in
other languages besides English?
No, we do not currently
have plans to create an eGranary entirely in any other
language. This is because we don't currently have the
funding to start such a project. This does not mean that the
eGranary is English-only. Some Web sites we have permission
for do have alternate versions of their materials in other
languages and these may be included on the eGranary. There
are also language-learning materials on the eGranary for
languages besides English.
-
What exactly is on the eGranary Digital
Library?
For an idea of the content we have permission for,
please see our Web page at
www.widernet.org/digitallibrary/content/PermissionsReport.asp. Some of this will not be available until the new eGranary
2.0 (which will be 2 TBs rather than 750 GBs) comes out, but
most of the content on this Web site is on the eGranary. If
you'd like to know if anything specific is on the eGranary,
like a certain Web site or materials on a certain topic,
please let us know by emailing
librarian@widernet.org.
