The Frediani family is not a typical donor of the eGranary Digital Library which is exciting for the WiderNet Project. Normally being donated by decision makers and religious groups, John Frediani heard about the eGranary Digital Library through an article in the San Jose Mercury News. “It was refreshing to see what a huge effect even a single family can have on an African community by donating an eGranary Digital Library Lab” Cliff Missen said.

John and Shannon Frediani, their three children, and two other couples installed five laptops networked to the eGranary Digital Library. Along with the laptops, the Voices of Angels Foundation donated 72 textbooks. The eGranary network was set up in two days, “This was perfect” Frediani said, “The efficient set up allowed the rest of the week to be fully dedicated to introducing the computers to students and faculty.”

With the help of his son Joseph and another volunteer’s son Kavi, 25 students and 4 faculty members were trained, “They did most of the work with the students while we were busy working out technical issues” said Frediani.

While installing the eGranary, Frediani met with Dr. Steven Akintunde at the University of Jos. He received a tour of the university and the situation they are facing regarding internet access.  “He is a very remarkable man” said Frediani, “He was able to give us a brief look at the situation at the University, a very exciting place, with a lot of challenges.”

Frediani and the volunteers had a very positive experience in Jos, “the excitement and gratitude from the students, faculty, and parents at CMIA was overwhelming, as were some of the ongoing needs and challenges” Frediani said. Through the installation of the eGranary and the week training they enjoyed their time in Jos, “It was hard to leave as we felt very deeply connected with the faculty and students in spite of the short time, and they were sad to see us go so soon as well. We are already looking at options for our next trip.”

The Voices of Angels Foundation is hoping to train more people in Nigeria in the future. “It was a fantastic success” Frediani said, “both the students and faculty were amazed and delighted by even a small taste of the eGranary content.”

Students In Free Enterprise

The Government All Boys Secondary School
Students In Free Enterprise, a University of Iowa student organization donated an eGranary digital library to a school in India. Also known as SIFE, their goal is to help children and people around the world.

Abiding by this mission, SIFE wanted to help further the education of children in India, “We wanted to provide information to a less fortunate school, to help expand and broaden their education by supplying an eGranary,” SIFE member Ruhee Arora said.

Raising money by selling Chap Stick at Iowa football games, cleaning houses, and receiving donations from friends and family, the student organization donated the eGranary Digital Library to the Government All Boys Secondary school of Tarn Taran, a small town in Punjab, India. The school consists of 1300 students that range from 6th grade to 12th grade.

Arora and her father traveled to Taran Taran in December to set up the eGranary Digital Library. The father daughter duo also trained the Tarn Taran students, “They were very excited and curious, with every click of the mouse as to what was going to be shown to them next or how something worked,” Arora said, “Their eyes never left the screen.”

Arora and SIFE want to continue their efforts to help children around the world and plan on donating another eGranary Digital Library, “I think the most important thing is giving everyone in the world a chance to keep up to date with the new advance world, technology, and have it at their finger tips,” Arora said, “It’s easy, its safe and it’s fun.”
