| Since 2005, the WiderNet Project has
had a memorandum of understanding with the World
Computer Exchange to work cooperatively towards the
goals of spreading knowledge through digital technology.
As North America's largest non-profit supplier of
computers to schools and youth centers in developing
countries, the WCE aims to use the eGranary Digital
Library to increase information access for those who
lack Internet connectivity. The WiderNet Project
looks forward to expanding the use of the eGranary
Digital Library through WCE's wide network of schools
and technical support persons.
Both organizations are working together to explore
ways to develop an eGranary Digital Library in Spanish
and/or Portuguese for Latin America in order to deliver
fast and free access to digital knowledge to a broader
swath of scholars and practitioners worldwide.
As a part of this strategic partnership, the
directors of both projects (Tim Anderson and Cliff
Missen) serve on the partner's steering/advisory
committee.
So far, the World Computer Exchange has connected over
2,000 schools and
850,000 young people to the Internet through over 20,000
donated computers.
The WCE provides online 'help desk' support to
schools & centers in technology, telecenter management,
and local content development. They also work to pair
sister-schools to increase cultural understanding
through their network of volunteers, sister-schools and
computer collection points in 30 U.S. and Canadian
cities.
The World Computer Exchange also partners with
UNESCO, UNDP, UNICEF, USAID, World Economic Forum, iEARN,
Rotary Clubs, Sister-Cities, and Peace Corps Volunteers.
