Skannet

Wow! These guys are really cooking. They have 40 modems in the pool & 6000 dial-up customers. Since they can't get more phone lines from Nhtel, they are focusing on servicing wireless customers around Ibadan using Cisco Airolan equipment. They report good success with the business, with over 200 clients so far and a waiting list for more. "I'm keeping a stock of 50 units these days," says Sunday.

The University of Ibadan has three such wireless connections.

They have a 512k satellite connection through the German consolidator ?G&T??. Within the next few days they will complete an upgrade to 1mbit.

Skannet now has a CyberCafe, charging 6N/min.

Sunday Folayan reports that things are in motion to expand to ??? and Abuja this next year.

He's in the market for 13 new staff members and was surprised to hear me suggest that he start recruiting from Jos. We discussed the benefits of a Skannet/Jos collaboration. Sunday wondered if he might be able to purchase bandwidth from UNIJOS and I suggested that Skannet contract with UJ to use the Computer Center for an after hours CyberCafe.

Skannet is a all-Nigeria, home grown ISP, starting out as an email only service in 19??. For many of their early years, the folks at Skannet provided the most reliable service in the country, attracting clients from the width and breadth of Nigeria -- even from markets with competing local ISPs.

Skannet snagged a satellite license in 2000 and fast became the area's leading ISP.

ICT managers frequently become paralyzed by uncertainty and insecurity.

It is hard for most supervisors to measure the effectiveness of their ICT employees because cannot know what might be considered reasonably interns of time and effort.
