REPORT OF TWO DAYS INTENSIVE TRAINING AND ICT CONFERENCE HELD IN UNIVERSITY OF JOS , JOS PLATEAU STATE

FROM 13TH - 15TH OF FEBRUARY, 2002.

Preamble:

        It all started at a place called UNIJOS computer center, indeed an ICT center for the University of JOS. I arrived at exactly 9:25am of Tuesday 12th February, 2002 ahead of time. On Wednesday morning I prepared myself for the two days intensive training as well as the ICT conference where I was expected to deliver a paper on “Trends in the development of ICT in Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto” on behalf of my Coordinator A.I Chafe, who was the resource person and author of the said paper.

TECHNICAL REPORT

   The ceremony was declared opened by the DVC ADMIN, University of JOS on behalf of the Vice Chancellor after which two papers were delivered. The first being “Introduction to UNIJOS intranet” by John Gotip was followed by “Introduction to the internet” by Daniel Yakmut all from University of JOS NUNET and Computer Center respectively.

   Cliff Missen is the Director Widernet project and resource person for the training titled “Digitizing your materials for the world wide web”. Between the hours of 11:30am to 5:00pm we digested topics on how computers store, displays and print images, creating new graphics and Bitmap image as well as image editing techniques.

ü        Cropping, resizing, and forming images

ü        Creating clearer pictures

ü        Retouching images

Day two: Thursday 14th February 2002

Having learnt about images and editing techniques, we were exposed on scanning images and text as well as digital photography using scanners and digital cameras respectively.

 Cliff Missen led us through interesting project implementation on web design by combining text, images and frames. We spent the rest of our time on web page design using front page.

 DAY 3 ICT CONFERENCES

   We all emerge at senate chamber, venue of the conference fully backed up by widernet Director Cliff Missen from University of IOWA United state. It was declared open by professor Kolawole Chairman of Deans University of Jos. The conference was divided into three major sessions

1st session

q       Development of ICT in Nigeria/organization

ü     Trends in the Development of ICT in the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto:  By A.I Chafe (represented by Nasir S. Zarummai)

ü     Networking the Nigeria University System: The UNN experience

All the papers were moderated by Jerry Buhari from ABU zaria

2nd session

The session began alongside breakfast, courtesy of widernet project.

All the papers were moderated by G.M.Nwamara MIS unit. Nsukka.

3rd session

q       Networking in the Nigerian Universities System

ü     An analysis of lessons learned by Resourcery in the provision of Information Technology Solutions to Nigerian Universities: Resourcery Inc. Lagos

ü     Solar Backup Systems for Computer Network: Mr Lawal. MD Solar Electric Systems Limited

Moderator: Mr E. G. Eseyin Director UNIJOS Computer center. The ceremony was closed by Dr Phil Ostien on behalf of Chairman ICT Committee.

My Contact after the conference

After the conference, I met with different representatives of educational institutions, NGOs and private sector. Having discussed with them on the way forward and sustainable development we arrived at the following:

Ø     That all hands will be on deck to assist the university in the area of Information Technology

Ø     That exchange program in terms of personnel will be facilitated between the University and those concerned

Ø     That we will also establish business partnership that will enhance the productivity of the University community
