National Conference on ICT in Higher Education
Call for Papers

The University of Jos and the Widernet Project invite you to the Third Annual Nigerian National Conference on ICT in Higher Education at the University of Jos on December 11th and 12th.

As well, this year we offer three two-day pre-conference tutorials: "Wireless Networking," "Designing Databases for the World Wide Web," and "Computer Repair and Maintenance." All will be held on December 9th and 10th.

CONFERENCE DETAILS

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the best practices and lessons learned at universities throughout Nigeria over two days. Presentations will reflect practical real-world experience in the planning, deployment, management, and maintenance of ICT in an academic setting. These experiences include training programs, network implementations, user services, ICT funding, power supply issues, staffing, and any ICT related issue.

This year's presenters, representing four Nigerian universities as well as other agencies, will include such topics as Strategic Planning for ICT, Student-run Computer Labs, Data Warehouse Design, and Managing Departmental Networks.

The cost for this two-day conference is N5,000 which includes snacks, refreshments, handouts, and lunch at the training site. Participants will also receive software and technical CDs (worth over N10,000) as well as be eligible to win door prizes from Microsoft and Red Hat.

PRE-CONFERENCE TUTORIALS

This year we offer three pre-conference tutorials. These are two-day small-group training sessions with ample opportunity for hands-on experience.

Wireless Networking
Instructor: Niran Oluwaranti, Obafemi Awolowo University and the UNIJOS NUNet Staff
This two-day workshop will feature presentations on wireless networking, both local area networking and wide area (building-to-building) networking. It will include a hands-on demonstration of wireless technology using new equipment from 3Com.

Designing Databases for the World Wide Web
Instructor: Cliff Missen, The University of Iowa
Using Microsoft FrontPage and Microsoft Access, we demonstrate how to easily set up Web-based data entry and reports. Using a Web server with FrontPage extensions, we'll show how even beginning users can build database interfaces and "upsize" them to SQL.

Computer Repair and Maintenance
Instructor: Mike Goo, The WiderNet Project
In this hands-on workshop, students will learn the basics of PC repair and maintenance. In the first part of the course, students will learn about the major hardware components of a PC by completely disassembling and then reassembling a PC. Students will then learn techniques for troubleshooting common hardware related problems. Students will also learn how to prepare a new PC for operating system installation.

The cost for each two-day tutorial is N3,000 which includes snacks, refreshments, handouts, and lunch at the training site.
