ALO Synergy Conference
Project Report August, 2001

Progress Report

Slow Start
  • Putting staff together at Iowa took longer than expected
  • Complementary grant had us focusing on decision makers first
  • Email in Nigeria not reliable enough to do programs with multiple participants
  • Securing CBT software donations took longer than expected (Intellectual property risks, etc.)

Accomplishments
  • Two Nigerian cohorts have visited Iowa to tour, teach, and promote linkages
  • Two Iowa faculty have visited partner universities in Nigeria to explore linkages
  • Determined industry standard training tracks for technicians  (CompTIA A+  and Network+)
  • Recruited 32 trainees from 15 universities  (another eight are being recruited now)
  • Created resource CD for technicians with over 10,000 documents from various support Web sites (getting permissions from over a hundred authors and publishers)
  • Secured donation of LearnKey CBT software for each participant (value $40,000)
  • Secured donation of current Red Hat Linux Professional Server for each institution (value: $5,000)
  • Still working with other potential donors
  • Miscellaneous consulting on various ICT issues (New Deal computers, Cisco Academy, wireless networking, satellite Internet connectivity, etc.)

An Unexpected Aside
  • Have collected over 100 used but still functional Pentium computers for partner universities.
  • Staff of WiderNet project researched shipping alternatives and arranged container
  • Collection and preparation of donations done entirely by volunteers
